Diatom Hotspots Driven by Western Boundary Current Instability

چکیده
Climatic changes have decreased the stability of Gulf Stream (GS), increasing frequency at which its meanders interact with Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) continental shelf and slope region. These intrusions are thought to suppress biological productivity by transporting low-nutrient water otherwise productive edge Here we present evidence widespread, anomalously intense subsurface diatom hotspots in MAB sea that likely resulted from a GS intrusion July 2019. The (at ∼50 m) were associated mass properties characteristic (∼100 m); it is probable upwelling during transport into sea, meander directly intruding onto east where observed. Further work required unravel how increasingly frequent direct could influence marine ecosystems.

Alternating current driven instability in magnetic junctions.
An effect is considered of alternating (high-frequency) current on the spin-valve-type magnetic junction configuration. The stability with respect to small fluctuations is investigated in the macrospin approximation. When the current frequency is close to the eigenfrequency (precession frequency) of the free layer, parametric resonance occurs. Both collinear configurations, antiparallel and par...
متن کاملGinzburg - Landau vortex dynamics driven by an applied boundary current
In this paper we study the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations on a smooth, bounded domain Ω ⊂ R2, subject to both an applied magnetic field and an applied boundary current. We model the boundary current by a gauge invariant inhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition. After proving well-posedness of the equations with this boundary condition, we study the evolution of the energy of the solut...
متن کاملNonlinear current-driven ion-acoustic instability driven by phase-space structures
The nonlinear stability of current-driven ion-acoustic waves in collisionless electron-ion plasmas is analyzed. Seminal simulations from the 80’s are revisited. Accurate numerical treatment shows that subcritical instabilities do not grow from an ensemble of waves, except very close to marginal stability and for large initial amplitudes. Further from marginal stability, one isolated phase-space...
متن کاملNonlinear Radiating Instability of a Barotropic Eastern Boundary Current
Linear and nonlinear radiating instabilities of an eastern boundary current are studied using a barotropic quasigeostrophic model in an idealized meridional channel. The eastern boundary current is meridionally uniform and produces unstable modes in which long waves are most able to radiate. These long radiating modes are easily suppressed by friction because of their small growth rates. Howeve...
متن کاملAgeostrophic, anticyclonic instability of a geostrophic, barotropic boundary current
After having previously demonstrated the occurrence of ageostrophic, anticyclonic instability (AAI) for several other steady flows, in this paper we further test the hypothesis that rotating, stably stratified, shear flows are generally subject to AAI at finite Rossby (Ro) and Froude (Fr) numbers by calculating the inviscid, incompressible normal modes of a geostrophic, barotropic boundary curr...
